Xeriscaping is a landscaping practice that uses drought-tolerant native and adaptive plants to reduce water use and maintenance. Implementing exterior light shelves is the best answer because light shelves can redirect daylight deeper into a space while reducing direct glare near windows. In LEED Indoor Environmental Quality, daylight strategies should improve visual comfort, reduce dependence on electric lighting, and avoid excessive brightness or glare that could reduce occupant satisfaction. Exterior light shelves, shading devices, glazing selection, blinds, and daylight-responsive controls can all support better daylight management. High-frequency ballasts reduce flicker in fluorescent lighting but do not control daylight glare. Task lighting gives occupants localized light, but it does not directly mitigate glare from windows. Reducing all window area may reduce glare, but it can also reduce daylight and views. Light shelves support both daylight access and visual comfort.

Applying non-toxic dust suppressants is the best answer because construction activity pollution prevention aims to reduce erosion, sedimentation, and airborne dust during construction. LEED Sustainable Sites requires strategies that limit environmental damage caused by construction activities. Dust suppressants, temporary seeding, mulching, silt fences, erosion control blankets, and other erosion and sediment control measures can help stabilize disturbed soil and reduce particulate pollution. Masks may protect individual workers, but they do not reduce dust released into the environment. Weekly air quality testing may identify a problem but does not directly control particulates. Increasing exposed soil areas would worsen dust, erosion, and runoff problems. A proper construction pollution prevention plan protects air, soil, water bodies, and surrounding communities.
