In an AOS-CX VSX environment, LACP is the standard for forming Multi-Chassis Link Aggregation Groups (MC-LAGs). However, LACP has a " chicken and egg " problem during certain boot processes.

The LACP Dilemma: LACP requires a software driver or " actor " on the client device to exchange BPDUs with the switch. During a Preboot Execution Environment (PXE) Boot , a server or workstation does not yet have its OS or LACP drivers loaded. Consequently, the switch receives no LACP packets, and by default, it keeps the LAG ports in a " blocked " or " waiting " state to prevent loops.

LACP Fallback Function: The lacp fallback command allows the VSX members to temporarily treat the LAG ports as non-bonded individual interfaces if no LACP partner is detected. This allows the device to communicate over a single physical link during the PXE process to download its OS image.

The Transition: Once the OS is loaded and the LACP driver starts sending BPDUs, the switch automatically transitions the ports back into a fully functional, bonded LAG.

Why other options are incorrect:

Option A: LACP mode (Active vs. Passive) is handled by the lacp mode command, not fallback.

Option D: While fallback results in a single interface operating, the intent and design requirement is to facilitate the pre-OS boot process, not simply to limit the partner to one interface.

Dynamic Segmentation (DS) requires certain capabilities on the switches to support user role assignment and traffic segmentation based on identity. The CX 6100 series switches do not support Dynamic Segmentation due to hardware and feature limitations. Therefore, they must be replaced with CX 6300 models, which support DS features natively.

Options involving GRE tunnels or VXLAN tunnels relate to traffic forwarding but do not enable DS on unsupported hardware.

Applying licenses does not upgrade hardware capabilities for DS.

When a VSX primary switch is powered off, it loses connectivity with management systems such as HPE Aruba Central. This causes the management system to trigger a " Switch Disconnected " alert because the switch is no longer reachable.

" Switch Reboot " alerts would indicate a restart, not power off.

" Switch Stack Conductor Change " refers to stack leadership changes, not VSX primary down.

" Switch STP Root Change " relates to Spanning Tree Protocol root bridge changes.

Hence, powering off the VSX primary causes a " Switch Disconnected " alert.

The term " Active " in BGP is one of the most misunderstood states. It sounds positive, but it actually indicates that the switch is " actively " trying to establish a TCP connection and failing.

eBGP Default Behavior: By default, External BGP (eBGP) expects neighbors to be directly connected. Because of this, eBGP packets are sent with a Time to Live (TTL) of 1 .

The Loopback Problem: In the exhibit, the switches are peering using their Loopback 0 addresses (update-source loopback 0). Even if the switches are physically connected, the Loopback interface is considered a " hop " away from the physical interface.

TTL Expiry: When Agg-1 sends a BGP packet to Agg-2 ' s loopback, the TTL of 1 expires before the packet can reach the logical loopback interface. This causes the TCP connection to fail, keeping the session in the Active state.

The Solution (eBGP Multihop): To fix this, you must configure ebgp-multihop (usually with a value of 2 or more). This increases the TTL, allowing the BGP packets to reach the loopback address.

Side Note on the Exhibit: If you look closely at Agg-1 ' s configuration, there is a typo: the neighbor is defined as 10.3.0.3 but the address-family activation is for 10.3.0.2. While this would also cause a failure, the core architectural concept being tested here regarding " Active " state and loopbacks is the TTL/Multihop requirement.
