Object Storage is a regional service and is not tied to any specific compute instance. You can access data from anywhere inside or outside the context of the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, as long you have internet connectivity and can access one of the Object Storage endpoints. Authorization and resource limits are discussed later in this topic.

Object Storage also supports private access from Oracle Cloud Infrastructure resources in a VCN through a service gateway. A service gateway allows connectivity to the Object Storage public endpoints from private IP addresses in private subnets. You can think of a Dynamic Routing Gateway (DRG) as a virtual router that provides a path for private traffic (that is, traffic that uses private IPv4 addresses) between your VCN and networks outside the VCN's region.

For example, if you use an IPSec VPN or Oracle Cloud Infrastructure FastConnect (or both) to connect your on-premises network to your VCN, that private IPv4 address traffic goes through a DRG that you create and attach to your VCN. The primary goal for distributing resources across multiple availability domains in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure is to improve fault tolerance and high availability. An availability domain is one or more data centers located within a region that have fault-tolerant power and network connectivity. Availability domains are isolated from each other within a region, which provides protection from failures that affect multiple data centers at once. By distributing resources across multiple availability domains, users can ensure that their applications can continue to run even if one availability domain becomes unavailable.

To design a high availability architecture, three key elements should be considered— redundancy, monitoring, and failover:

1) Redundancy means that multiple components can perform the same task. The problem of a single point of failure is eliminated because redundant components can take over a task performed by a component that has failed.

2) Monitoring means checking whether or not a component is working properly.

3) Failover is the process by which a secondary component becomes primary when the primary component fails.

The best practices introduced here focus on these three key elements. Although high availability can be achieved at many different levels, including the application level and the cloud infrastructure level, here we will focus on the cloud infrastructure level.

A fault domain is a grouping of hardware and infrastructure within an availability domain. Each availability domain contains three fault domains. Fault domains let you distribute your instances so that they are not on the same physical hardware within a single availability domain. As a result, an unexpected hardware failure or a Compute hardware maintenance that affects one fault domain does not affect instances in other fault domains. You can optionally specify the fault domain for a new instance at launch time, or you can let the system select one for you.

All the availability domains in a region are connected to each other by a low-latency, high bandwidth network. This predictable, encrypted interconnection between availability domains provides the building blocks for both high availability and disaster recovery.

You must create a dedicated virtual machine host before you can place any instances on it. When creating the dedicated virtual machine host, you select an availability domain and fault domain to launch it in. All the VM instances that you place on the host will subsequently be created in this availability domain and fault domain. You also select a compartment when you create the dedicated virtual machine host, but you can move the host to a new compartment later without impacting any of the instances placed on it. You can also create the instances in a different compartment than the dedicated virtual machine host, or move them to difference compartments after they have been launched.

You are billed for the dedicated virtual machine host as soon as you create it, but you are not billed for any of the individual VM instances you place on it. You will still be billed for image licensing costs if they apply to the image you are using for the VM instances.

You can connect to a File Storage service file system from any bare metal, virtual machine, or container instance in your Virtual Cloud Network (VCN). You can also access a file system from outside the VCN using Oracle Cloud Infrastructure FastConnect and Internet Protocol security (IPSec) virtual private network (VPN).

Large Compute clusters of thousands of instances can use the File Storage service for high-performance shared storage. Storage provisioning is fully managed and automatic as your use scales from a single byte to exabytes without upfront provisioning.

The File Storage service supports the Network File System version 3.0 (NFSv3) protocol. The service supports the Network Lock Manager (NLM) protocol for file locking functionality.

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure File Storage employs 5-way replicated storage, located in different fault domains, to provide redundancy for resilient data protection. Data is protected with erasure encoding.

The File Storage service uses the "eventual overwrite" method of data eradication. Files are created in the file system with a unique encryption key. When you delete a single file, its associated encryption key is eradicated, making the file inaccessible. When you delete an entire file system, the file system is marked as inaccessible. The service systematically traverses deleted files and file systems, frees all the used space, and eradicates all residual files.

Use the File Storage service when your application or workload includes big data and analytics, media processing, or content management, and you require Portable Operating System Interface (POSIX)-compliant file system access semantics and concurrently accessible storage. The File Storage service is designed to meet the needs of applications and users that need an enterprise file system across a wide range of use cases, including the following:

What Is IaaS?

Infrastructure as a service (IaaS) is a type of cloud service model in which computing resources are hosted in the cloud. Businesses can use the IaaS model to shift some or all of their use of on-premises or colocated data center infrastructure to the cloud, where it is owned and managed by a cloud provider. These infrastructure elements can include compute, network, and storage hardware as well as other components and software.

In the IaaS model, the cloud provider owns and operates the hardware and software and also owns or leases the data center. When you have an IaaS solution, you rent the resources like compute or storage, provision them when needed, and pay for the resources your organization consumes. For some resources such as compute, you’ll pay for the resources you use. For others such as storage, you’ll pay for capacity.

How Does IaaS Work?

In a typical IaaS model, a business—which can be of any size—consumes services like compute, storage, and databases from a cloud provider. The cloud provider offers those services by hosting hardware and software in the cloud. The business will no longer need to purchase and manage its own equipment, or space to host the equipment, and the cost will shift to a pay-as-you-go model. Oracle is committed to providing the best-in-class service levels and believes that SLAs are key performance indicators for customers of cloud providers. Each OCI service has its own definition of service level. OCI offers competitive SLAs for more than 50 PaaS and IaaS public cloud services4

SLAs are defined as a number of nines for a month and a percentage credit. For example, Oracle NoSQL Database Cloud Service offers an availability SLA of 99.995%. If the monthly uptime percentage falls below 99.995%, but is equal to or greater than 99%, then the customer is eligible for a 10% credit for their spend for that service; if the monthly uptime percentage falls below 99%, but is equal to or greater than 95%, then the customer is eligible for a 25% credit; if the monthly uptime percentage falls below 95%, then the customer is eligible for a 100% credit4

SLAs are financially backed commitments to provide a minimum level of service to customers. Alarms allow you to set rules for metric data and receive notifications when the rules are met or breached. For example, you can create an alarm that triggers when the CPU utilization of a compute instance exceeds 80% for more than 5 minutes, and sends an email notification to a specified topic in Notifications service6

Network Security Groups (NSGs) and Security Lists (SLs) are two virtual firewall features that can be used for controlling traffic in an OCI Virtual Cloud Network (VCN). NSGs and SLs allow you to create stateful network filtering rules that allow or deny network traffic based on source and destination IP addresses, ports, and protocols5

NSGs are a subsequent feature designed for application components that have different security postures. NSGs are a set of security rules that you can apply to a set of VNICs in a VCN. NSGs are associated with VNICs, not subnets. You can use NSGs to implement a network security policy at the level of individual VNICs or a group of VNICs. For example, you can use NSGs to control traffic between tiers of an application deployed in a VCN5

SLs are the original virtual firewall feature from the Networking service. SLs are a set of security rules that you apply to a subnet in a VCN. SLs are associated with subnets, not VNICs. The Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Domain Name System (DNS) service lets you create and manage your DNS zones. You can create zones, add records to zones, and allow Oracle Cloud Infrastructure's edge network to handle your domain's DNS queries.

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Autonomous Database supports two workload types: transaction processing and data warehousing. NSGs allow users to define granular security policies for different types of resources within a VCN.

DATA ENCRYPTION

Protect customer data at-rest and in-transit in a way that allows customers to meet their security and compliance requirements for cryptographic algorithms and key management

The Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Block Volume service always encrypts all block volumes, boot volumes, and volume backups at rest by using the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) algorithm with 256-bit encryption. By default all volumes and their backups are encrypted using the Oracle-provided encryption keys. Each time a volume is cloned or restored from a backup the volume is assigned a new unique encryption key.

The File Storage service encrypts all file system and snapshot data at rest. By default all file systems are encrypted using Oracle-managed encryption keys. You have the option to encrypt all of your file systems using the keys that you own and manage using the Vault service.

Object Storage employs 256-bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES-256) to encrypt object data on the server. Each object is encrypted with its own data encryption key. Data encryption keys are always encrypted with a master encryption key that is assigned to the bucket. Encryption is enabled by default and cannot be turned off. By default, Oracle manages the master encryption key.

Network File System (NFS) is the file protocol that Oracle Cloud Infrastructure File Storage Service uses to enable file sharing across instances. NFS is a distributed file system protocol that allows a user on a client computer to access files over a network in a manner similar to how local storage is accessed. The File Storage service supports the NFS version 3.0 protocol with Network Lock Manager (NLM) for file locking functionality2.
