Job analysis focuses on the responsibilities, duties, tasks, competencies, knowledge, skills, and expected performance associated with a particular role. Its unit of analysis is therefore closely connected with individual job performance.
A job analysis can identify what an employee must accomplish, what activities must be performed, what standards apply, and what capabilities are necessary to meet those standards. This information can then support job descriptions, recruitment criteria, performance expectations, learning objectives, assessments, and career development.
Organizational goals operate at a broader strategic level and would generally be examined through organizational analysis. Team goals concern collective outputs and interdependent group performance. Process goals concern workflow efficiency and the effectiveness of linked activities across roles or functions.
Although individual job performance ultimately contributes to team and organizational objectives, the immediate focus of job analysis remains the requirements placed on an individual role. In talent development, connecting those role requirements to broader business outcomes is important, but the analytical distinction remains necessary because different levels of analysis answer different performance questions.
