The Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops architecture is divided into multiple conceptual layers. In Citrix architectural documentation, the Resource Layer is the layer responsible for the hosting infrastructure, which consists of:
Hypervisors (Citrix Hypervisor/XenServer, Hyper-V, VMware, Nutanix AHV)
Virtual machines
Machine creation technologies (MCS/PVS)
This layer provides the actual compute, storage, and virtualization capabilities required to run VDAs. Since the hypervisor platform is part of the virtual machine hosting environment, it resides in the Resource Layer.
The Hardware Layer refers only to physical server components.
The Control Layer manages brokering, delivery, and site configuration.
The Access Layer involves authentication and user connection entry points such as StoreFront and Citrix Gateway.
Therefore, because the hypervisor is part of the virtualization hosting environment, it belongs specifically to the Resource Layer.
